Namwon fans have been crafted since 1925, when a cooperative was established in Josanri, producing work of such quality it reached markets as far as Manchuria and Japan. For over fifty years, every step has been carried out entirely by hand. Choi Soobong is the last master craftsman of Namwon fans — a third-generation maker who continues to work in the traditional way, creating fans that draw out the elasticity of Damyang bamboo and the refined texture of hanji.

Bamboo handle size and shape may vary. Natural warping can occur during the hanji drying process — this is part of the fan's character, and actually helps direct airflow. To flatten, press under a heavy object for a day. As whole bamboo handles differ in form, dimensions may vary by approximately ±30 mm. Slight variations in shape, size, and color are an inherent quality of handcrafted work.
