Handbuilding with Clay & Hands

Berlin-based Korean ceramic artist Saeam Kwon works with dark, textured stoneware, creating a quiet tension between the raw character of clay and refined, lightweight forms. Her practice brings together minimalist forms and traditional Korean sensibilities, with a particular focus on material, proportion and the relationship between objects and everyday use.

For our first pottery workshop at EST. NOTE, we invite Saeam Kwon to share her approach to working with clay — beginning simply with the material and our hands.

“In this workshop, we will work with the same clay I use in my own practice, but without relying on a wide range of tools.

Instead, we will work mainly with clay and our hands, using simple movements such as pressing, pinching, stretching and shaping. The idea is to slow down and pay attention to how the clay responds to your hands — its moisture, resistance, thickness and form.

For me, working with clay starts with understanding the material through touch. You don’t need many tools to make something with clay. Your hands can already do much more than you might expect.

The workshop is therefore less about following a fixed technique and more about learning to feel and respond to the material, while discovering what your own hands can do.”

Working with the same textured black clay used in Saeam’s own practice, we will handbuild tea cups while exploring the texture, resistance and natural character of the material.

The workshop also includes a Korean tea table with tea and small bites, served in ceramics made by Saeam Kwon — a chance to experience her work not only through making, but through using it at the table.
